What are the benefits of pregnancy massage?

In case you missed it over on my Instagram, I am excited to announce that I am now qualified in pregnancy massage! With that in mind, I thought I’d write a little post (my first in forever!) all about the benefits of pregnancy massage. If you’re over 12 weeks pregnant and live in York, please do get in touch to see how I can help.

What are the benefits of pregnancy massage?

If you’re pregnant, you’re probably going through a whole range of emotions right now, perhaps accompanied by a fair few aches and pains as your body makes room for your growing baby. Extra pressure is put on your joints and ligaments, as well as on your respiratory and circulatory systems.

Some of the benefits of pregnancy massage are:

  • It stimulates circulation, which helps with the delivery of nutrients and fluid to the vital organs (including the placenta) benefiting you and aiding the development of your baby.
  • It also aids lymphatic drainage, which speeds up the elimination of toxins from the blood and the cells of the body.
  • Back pain and hip pain affect around 75% of women, partly due to weight gain and the fact that your bump and gravity cause your pelvis to shift forward, putting a strain on your joints and the pelvis itself. Pregnancy massage can help to reduce this muscle tension and provide some relief.
  • Reducing muscle tension can also reduce the pain associated with nerve compression.
  • There will be a reduction in the likelihood of developing varicose veins
  • Pregnancy massage focuses a lot on massaging the muscles of breathing , such as the intercostals, pectoralis minors and scalenes. As the uterus grows, it pushes up towards the diaphragm, reducing the amount of space available to the lungs. A relaxing massage will encourage deeper breathing and hopefully help with that feeling of being breathless!
  • The massage itself is incredibly relaxing. You’ll be propped up on pillows and will be given the chance to just stop and rest for a change. This should help improve your sleep, reduce your stress levels (and thinking about that never-ending to do list!) which helps to balance all the emotions you’ll be feeling.
  • Finally, pregnancy massage lowers blood pressure and can keep high blood pressure under control, as well as releasing that all important oxytocin.
